Nov, 2014 : Microsoft Patches 19 Year Old Windows Bug

📅 - Microsoft has patched a 19 year old bug found that has been present since Windows 95.

The vulnerability was discovered by researchers at IBM in May, though the bug was not announced until this month because both IBM and Microsoft was working to patch it before going public, BBC reports.

“In some respects, this vulnerability has been sitting in plain sight for a long time despite many other bugs being discovered and patched in the same Windows library,” said IBM researcher Robert Freeman via blog post. “…it indicates that there may be other bugs still to be discovered.”

PC users are advised to download Microsoft's 14 security updates that address 33 flaws, as the bug allows attackers to remotely gain access to user's devices, though PC Worldnotes that the patch is only available to Windows Vista users and higher.

“The bug can be used by an attacker for drive-by attacks to reliably run code remotely and take over the user's machine,”added Freeman.

Currently there has not been any evidence that the bug has been exploited.
