Yahoo To Offer End-To-End Email Encryption Starting Next Year
📅 - At Black Hat's annual security conference yesterday, Yahoo's Chief Information Security Officer announced plans to offer end-to-end encryption to Mail users starting next year.
Google will be working with Yahoo to help the company increase its email security by offering an encrypted Mail version similar to Gmail that will prevent hackers and government agencies from reading users emails, reports SlashGear.
“We have to make it to clear to people it is not secret you're emailing your priest,” said Chief Information Security Officer Alex Stamos. “But the content of what you're emailing him is secret.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo's new email encryption service will use PGP, Pretty Good Privacy, a tool developed by cryptographer Phil Zimmerman. This tool provides cryptographic privacy to users, ensuring that emails, files, and other information will not be compromised by spying eyes.
Many tech companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, and Google have increased their security measures following last year's spying revelations from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
Yahoo is expected to launch its encrypted email service fall of 2015.
