Security Researcher Claims Aircrafts Could Be Hacked Using In-flight Wi-Fi

📅 August 5, 2014 - A cybersecurity researcher claims he has found a way to hack into the satellite communications equipment on aircrafts using vulnerabilities from the jet's Wi-Fi and inflight entertainment systems.

According to Reuters, IOActive researcher Ruben Santamarta discovered this vulnerability by “reverse engineering” firmware used in equipment made by Cobham Plc, Harris Corp, EchoStar Corp's Hughes Network Systems, Japan Radio Co Ltd., and Iridium Communications Inc.

By using the plane's Wi-Fi signal or entertainment system, hackers could infiltrate the plane's equipment, causing interference with the jets navigation and safety systems.

Santamarta's hack was conducted in a “controlled environment” in IOActive's lab, noting that it would be very difficult to attempt this hack on an actual flight in a real world setting.

“These devices are wide open. The goal of this talk is to help change that situation,” said Santamarta to Reuters.

Details of this research will be discussed later this week at the annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, an event where hackers and cyber security researcher gather to discuss research and potential future threats.
