Jul, 2014 : Chinese Hackers Target Canadian Government Computers

📅 - On Tuesday the Canadian government confirmed reports that Chinese hackers had targeted the National Research Council's networks for the last month, CTV News reports.

“Recently, the government of Canada, through the work of the Communications Security Establishment, detected and confirmed a cyber intrusion on the IT infrastructure of the National Research Council of Canada by a highly sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored actor,” said Canada's Chief Information Officer.

Security experts at NRC are currently working on ways to create new secure infrastructures, though it could take up to a year to implement the new systems.

“This could take approximately one year, however; every step is being taken to minimize disruption,” said the NRC. “Every step is being taken to minimize its impact on our clients and stakeholders.”

No further details were released about the attack due to “security and confidentiality reasons,” though the agency did note that an update will be released on Thursday.

Canada's National Research Council handles science and technology research such as satellite technology, health and medicine, security and disruptive technology, mining and energy, and ocean engineering.

Chinese hackers have been linked to compromising Canada's Finance Department, the Treasury Board, the Bank of Canada, and multiple email accounts of Parliament members.
