Jul, 2014 : Microsoft To Cut 18,000 Jobs Over The Next Year
📅 - Microsoft announced today that changes are about to happen, starting with thousands of job cuts. In an email sent out by CEO Satya Nadella, he stated that a total of 18,000 employees would be getting laid off over the next year, with 12,500 of those employees coming from the Nokia Devices and Services team.
According to ZDNet, those affected in the first wave of 13,000 cuts will be notified over the next six months. These cuts affect employees in sales, marketing, engineering, and factory workers.
Nadella noted in his email to all employees that the company will offer those affected severance, and in some cases help to relocate to a new job.
“The company expects to incur pre-tax charges of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion over the next four quarters, including $750 million to $800 million for severance and related benefit costs, and $350 million to $800 million of asset-related charges,” says a press release from the tech giant.
This is Microsoft's biggest job reduction ever, with the last major reduction of 5,800 coming from Steve Ballmer in 2009.
“The overall result of these changes will be more productive, impactful teams across Microsoft. These changes will affect both the Microsoft workforce and our vendor staff. Each organization is starting at different points and moving at different paces.”
Microsoft will release more details about its “innovation investments” in its fourth-quarter fiscal earning call on July 22nd.
