Chinese Hackers Compromised U.S. Government Systems To Gain Access To Federal Employee Data
📅 - An official from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed earlier this week that a group of Chinese hackers gained access to U.S. government computers.
The group compromised the computer networks through the Office of Personnel Management in order to gain information on federal employees who had applied for top-secret security clearance, reports The New York Times.
According to a representative from the Office of Personnel Management, the security breach occurred sometime in mid-March. Other federal agencies and state and local governments were alerted about the data breach.
The database the hackers infiltrated contained personal information on the employees such as foreign contacts, financial data, employment records, and drug use, if any.
Officials noted that the hack was traced back to China and that they had not “identified any loss of personally identifiable information.”
In May, the Justice Department filed a 31-count indictment against five Chinese military officials, accusing them of theft of trade secrets and economic espionage due to their attacks against U.S. companies.
Additionally, last month researchers from CrowdStrike uncovered evidence that a second Chinese hacking group known as “Putter Panda” had attacked satellite and aerospace companies in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. through its operation in Shanghai.
