Russian Hacker Arrested In Connection With Stealing U.S. Credit Cards
📅 - United States officials arrested a Russian hacker on Saturday for allegedly stealing credit card information from numerous retailers in the U.S.
Roman Valerevich Seleznev of Moscow was arrested in Guam over the weekend for hacking into cash register systems in the U.S. from 2009 to 2011 and trading the stolen information in underground digital forums in Russia, The New York Times reports.
Seleznev, also known as Track2, was indicted in March 2011 for operating multiple online forums where he distributed information such as account numbers and expiration dates which he acquired from installing malware into computer systems that stole the information.
The Secret Service noted that he is accused of stealing more than 200,000 credit card numbers from 2010 to 2011, where he earned more than $2 million from selling 140,000 of those card numbers.
“This scheme involved multiple network intrusions and data thefts for illicit financial gain,” said Julia Pierson, director of the Secret Service, in a statement. “The adverse impact this individual and other transnational organized criminal groups have on our nation's financial infrastructure is significant and should not be underestimated.”
He is facing several charges including five counts of bank fraud, eight counts of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer, eight counts of obtaining information from a protected computer, one count of possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices, two counts of trafficking unauthorized devices, and five counts of aggravated identity theft.
If found guilty, he could face more than 30 years in prison and be fined $3 million.
