Lawmakers Propose Bill To Ban The Creation of Internet “Fast Lanes”
📅 - Two Democratic lawmakers revealed a new bill on Tuesday that aims to stop the creation of Internet “fast lanes” that would allow service providers to charge companies for faster Internet service.
The bill, brought on by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Representative Doris Matsui of California, states that every Internet company should be treated equally by ISPs in order to assure that all companies big and small can deliver fast and reliable content to customers, Reuters reports.
“Americans are speaking loud and clear,” said Leahy. “They want an Internet that is a platform for free expression and innovation, where the best ideas and services can reach consumers based on merit rather than based on a financial relationship with a broadband provider.”
According to Tech Times, the Online Competition and Consumer Choice Act bill will not apply to “interconnection deals” like the ones between Netflix and Comcast and Verizon.
“Our country cannot afford ‘pay-for-play' schemes that divide our Internet into tiers based on who has the deepest pockets,” says Matsui. “The Online Competition and Consumer Choice Act will ban paid prioritization and ensure fair competition and consumer choices online. This is essential to the growth of our economy, and the health of our democracy.”
Sen. Patrick Leahy will hold a hearing next month in Vermont to discuss issues on Net Neutrality.
