Former Microsoft Employee Pleads Guilty To Theft Of Trade Secrets, Receives Three Month Prison Sentence
📅 - Former Microsoft employee, Alex Kibkalo, has been sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing trade secrets from Microsoft.
FBI agents arrested Kibkalo on March 19th in Bellevue, Wash., for revealing software updates for Windows RT and Microsoft's Activation Server Software Development Kit to a French blogger in July and August 2012, ComputerWorld reports.
The Russian national reportedly leaked the information because he was angry with Microsoft for receiving a poor performance evaluation.
Kibkalo was given a three month sentence and ordered to pay the Redmond-based company $22,500 in restitution on March 31st, though the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington later changed the fine to $100.
“I deeply regret that I have shared that [confidential] information,” wrote Kibkalo in a letter to the judge. “Having done that I have lost a job, one can only dream about. Moreover, when I have found another interesting job a year after, the echo of my mistake took that from me, too. For sure I was given good lessons, which I deserved.”
Once his sentence is complete, Kibkalo will be deported back to Russia.
