Chinese Military Hacks U.S. Satellite and Aerospace Companies

📅 June 10, 2014 - Researchers at security firm CrowdStrike have uncovered evidence to support that a second Chinese hacking group linked to China's People's Liberation Army has been targeting U.S. and European governments.

According to CNN, CrowdStrike detected that the hacking group, known as “Putter Panda”, had attacked defense, aerospace, and satellite companies in Japan, Europe, and the United States, stealing corporate trade secrets from its operation in Shanghai.

“China's decade-long economic espionage campaign is massive and unrelenting. Through widespread espionage campaigns, Chinese threat actors are targeting companies and governments in every part of the globe,” said CrowdStrike CEO, George Kurtz.

Kurtz noted that the California based firm had been tracking the group since 2012, but has documentation that the cyber-attacks date as far back as 2007, InfoSecurity reports.

This news comes just weeks after five Chinese military members were accused by the U.S. Department of Justice for theft of trade secrets and economic espionage due to their cyber-attacks against U.S. companies.
