📅 - Cellphone company, Vodafone, has released a detailed report revealing how government agencies use its systems for spying purposes.
In Vodafone's report, covering the period from April 1st, 2013 to March 31st 3014, the company breaks down stats from two categories, lawful interception and access to communications data.
In most of the 29 countries that Vodafone operates in, warrants are needed to access information, though some countries can access customer's text messages, phone calls, and emails whenever they want, reports the BBC.
“In those countries, Vodafone will not receive any form of demand for lawful interception access as the relevant agencies and authorities already have permanent access to customer communications via their own direct link,” states the transparency report.
The company says that it must comply with these requests, otherwise the governments could remove their license to operate and their employees could be at risk of “criminal sanctions” such as imprisonment.
“We therefore have to balance our responsibility to respect our customers' right to privacy against our legal obligation to respond to the authorities' lawful demands as well as our duty of care to our employees, recognising throughout our broader responsibilities as a corporate citizen to protect the public and prevent harm.”
