eBay Urges Customers To Change Passwords Following Data Breach
📅 - EBay is urging customers to change their password following a data breach by cyber criminals, announced the company on Wednesday.
According to a post from eBay, the hacked database contains encrypted passwords, customers' names, email and home addresses, date of birth, phone numbers, and employee information.
“Cyberattackers compromised a small number of employee log-in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay's corporate network,” the company said in a statement. There is “no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats.”
The database was hacked sometime between late February and early March, though the compromised employee credentials were not recognized till about two weeks ago.
PayPal, owned by eBay, released a statement on its website saying the data breach did not affect their customer's financial information.
“Extensive forensic research has shown no evidence of unauthorized access or compromise to personal or financial information for PayPal customers .PayPal customer and financial data is encrypted and stored separately, and PayPal never shares financial information with merchants, including eBay,” said PayPal.
Customers will be notified later today via email to change their passwords on eBay and on any other site that shares the same password.
