IBM To Add Virtual Assistant Technology To Watson Group Through Cognea Acquisition

📅 May 20, 2014 - IBM announced on Monday that its Watson group had acquired artificial intelligence startup company, Cognea.

Cognea offers “virtual assistants that relate to people using a wide variety of personalities- from suit-and-tie formal to kid-next-door friendly,” says Senior VP of Watson Group, Michael Rhodin. “We believe this focus on creating depth of personality, when combined with an understanding of the users' personalities will create a new level of interaction that is far beyond today's “talking” smartphones.”

With this acquisition, IBM hopes to integrate Cognea's software into Watson's conversational services, available to startups, enterprises, and universities, through the Watson Developer Cloud, says a blog post from IBM.

Rhodin noted that eventually users will be able to carry on conversations and engage in intellectual debates with computers, rather than just give a simple command.

“That's yesterday's technology. I'm talking about more realistic conversations—everything from friendly chitchat to intense debate. As cognitive conversation capabilities advance, we become more than impersonal button pushers.”

The Cognea acquisition follows IBM's purchases of Fluid, a cognitive shopping assistant, and Welltok, a developer of online health-care communities.
