May, 2014 : WordPress Automatic Updates: The Good and the Bad

📅 May 13, 2014 - One day not so long ago, I started receiving emails from my WordPress installations. I have about four WordPress sites on my server, and I was surprised to receive an email telling me they had updated themselves. Starting with WordPress version 3.7, the developers of the blogging software instituted automatic background updates in order to promote better security and “streamline the update experience”. There are some potentially good and bad issues with this new system.

The Good

You will always have the latest version of WordPress. That means cutting edge blog hosting technology
Security updates are automatically sent, so your site will stay secure
If you have multiple WordPress sites, this will make it easier to maintain them
Your themes and plugins may also automatically update, simplifying the process

The Bad

You will get the latest WordPress whether you want it or not. If you like to hack your installations, you will need to disable automatic updating to avoid breakage
Disabling automatic updates is currently not available in the Dashboard. You will have to edit your wp-config.php file.

As you can see, the benefits probably outweigh the disadvantages, and most blog hosting users will want to keep automatic updates enabled for the sake of simplicity. If you are using a standard WordPress installation and a well-supported theme, you should not have any troubles with the updates.
