Jun 7, 2010 : Atmail Announces Atmail 6.1.8

📅 - Latest version features CardDAV client support, allowing Atmail to view users address-books within the unified Webmail interface and Webmail theme support in CSS.

Atmail, a provider of Linux-based email management appliances and software, last week announced that it has released version 6.1.8 of their email server software. The company avers that version 6.1.8 features two major enhancements for Atmail: CardDAV client support, allowing Atmail to view users address-books within the unified Webmail interface and Webmail theme support in CSS. It adds that with this release of CardDAV support, Atmail's address book can now connect to a CardDAV server via open-standards as the source for all contact information, which is a major bonus for those wanting portable contact information, anywhere, anytime.

The company lists the following new features in Atmail 6.1.8:
  • Atmail CardDAV Client supports the open-protocol CardDAV for address book data. Connect to a CardDAV account and list, view, edit, modify contacts directly from the server. Embrace open-protocols for your contact data
  • Grouping Interface - Creating address book groups is now easier than ever. In the Atmail 6 Address Book, groups function like folders, complete with drag-and-drop support
  • Photo Thumbnails - Quickly add a contact's photo to their address book entry
  • Vcard support - For businesses and individuals relying on the rapid transfer of contact information, Vcard support helps by allowing the direct import (and export) of a contact's information, avoiding tedious data entry
  • Drag 'n Drop - Intuitive "Drag 'n Drop" functionality enables the easy management of groups of contacts
  • Shared Contacts - Contacts can be shared among users' address books
  • Theme support for the webmail user interface - New Granite theme available to those who prefer the corporate color palette
  • Installer support for Ubuntu 10.X - Server edition and Webmail client
  • New Windows Websync utility for Outlook - Improved performance, stability issues fixed and improved UTF-8 support
  • MD5 and CRYPT-MD5 support now available in the server edition - Choose the default password encryption type via the Webadmin for users and migrate from legacy platforms easier
The company explains the usage of Address-book Groupware as below:
  • Global Address Book entries representing every account on your Atmail system. The GAL (Global Address List) allows anyone in your organization to connect with other users and view contact information and details.
  • Personal Address-book allows users to separate personal contacts from Global and Shared contacts. These contacts can only be viewed by the individual user account.
  • Shared Address-book adds functionality to share contacts with other users (or groups of users). Shared contacts can be assigned read/write permissions which enables the users with whom the contacts are shared to modify the contact entries directly. Optionally, read-only access can be granted to allow the entry to be viewed by selected users, but can only be modified by the original owner.
"Atmail is one of the first Webmail clients to fully support CardDAV. With a growing number of desktop-clients and mobiles such as the iPhone and Android slated to support CardDAV. Say goodbye to proprietary formats for contact data.", said Ben Duncan, Atmail CEO. "We are preparing to provide the complete open-protocol messaging solution. The Webmail theme support in CSS demonstrates how easy Atmail front end interface is to customize to provide users multiple Webmail themes", he added.
