Jun 8, 2009 : Greenplum Announces Database 3.3
📅 - New features include online system expansion, new graphical administration console and core performance enhancements.
Greenplum, a provider of database software for data warehousing and analytics, today announced general availability of Greenplum Database 3.3, the latest version of the company's database software. According to the company, this release adds a wide range of capabilities that streamline management and enhance the performance of the product. It also claims to introduce a number of management and operations enhancements targeted at DBAs and IT professionals.
Online system expansion: Customers need the flexibility to resize their Database systems as their business needs dictate, says the company. It introduces the ability to add servers to a database system and expand across the new servers while the system is online and responding to queries. Each additional server adds additional storage capacity, query performance and loading performance to the system. Online system expansion is a key enabling feature within Greenplum's Enterprise Data Cloud initiative.
pgAdmin III administration console: According to the company, pgAdmin III is a feature rich Open Source administration and development platform for PostgreSQL. Greenplum Database 3.3 ships with an enhanced version of pgAdmin III that has been extended to work with Greenplum Database and provides full support for Greenplum-specific capabilities. The company has also contributed these enhancements back to the pgAdmin III Open Source project.
Scalability-optimized management commands: The company explains that it has incorporated a range of enhancements to manage commands (including starting and stopping the database, analysing tables, reintegration of failed nodes into the system) to improve performance and scalability on large systems. It also incorporates a number of core performance enhancements, including faster sorting and enhanced performance of parallel aggregations.
Expanded Platform Support: The company avers that its Database is supported on server hardware from a range of vendors including HP, Dell, Sun and IBM. Greenplum Database is also supported for non-production (development and evaluation) support on Mac OSX 10.5, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 or higher (32-bit) and CentOS Linux 5.2 or higher (32-bit).
