Jan 21, 2009 : Registrars Pushing .tel Domain Launch

📅 - Domain registrars have been actively promoting registration for the new top level domain .tel by encouraging trademark owners to apply for their domains before the TLD's upcoming landrush date, when registration will be open to the general public.

Sponsored by ICANN and operated by Telnic (telnic.org), .tel is intended as a top level domain for Internet communication services.

According to the Telnic website, the domain "allows individuals and businesses alike to store and manage all their contact information and keywords directly in the DNS without the need to build, host or manage a website."

There has been a certain underlying skepticism surrounding the .tel domain as to its actual value.

While most domain names cost around $10 per year, the .tel domains are significantly more expensive, priced at about $15 to $20 per year.

However, .tel is free of any ongoing hosting fees and .tel owners will not need to build or maintain a website in order for their domain to be found on the Internet.

The sunrise period for .tel began on December 3, 2008, where only trademark owners were allowed to register their names for a $399.00 non-refundable application fee.

The landrush begins at 3.00 p.m. GMT on February 3, which will be followed by the general availability ongoing stage on March 23 when the .tel domains will be available to everyone.

Many operators, including fixed-line, mobile or VoIP companies, including Orange, Vodafone, Hutchison 3G, T-Mobile, Sprint, Virgin Mobile and Skype, have all registered for their respective .tel TLDs.

Telnic says that a significant number of telecommunications organizations are not only registering their brands for .tel domains but are also investigating the .tel as a platform for added-value services themselves.

The .tel registry recently announced it signed a joint sponsorship agreement with Domainmonster (domainmonster.com 👉 Total Reviews: 11
