📅 December 12, 2008 - Baltimore-based managed service provider DataPoint has announced its Tide Point colocation facility has achieved Statement on Auditing Standards Number 70 Type II certification, reassuring its business customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Conducted over the last few months, by CBIZ MHM (cbiz.com) and Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C. (mhm-pc.com), the audit confirms that DataPoint meets the certification's exacting standards, according to its Thursday announcement.

The SAS 70 Type II is part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act defines the standards used by a service auditor to assess the reliability of a company's internal controls and its handling of critical business data. Originally intended for the financial services industry, SAS 70 certification is often a prerequisite for maintaining critical data for businesses. A Type II report is more exhaustive, involving detailed testing of the organization's controls over a minimum time period of six months.

"Obviously we are extremely proud of this accomplishment," DataPoint general manager Curtis DePass said in a statement. "The audit is very comprehensive and consists of more than 100 different criteria, of which we were confident we met. It is great, however, to have third-party verification of our ability to provide secure, redundant, and reliable data services."

DataPoint's data center is located at its headquarters in downtown Baltimore's Tide Point waterfront business campus (tide-point.com).

Requiring annual renewal, SAS 70 is a perennial compliance process that most data centers that handle financial data work toward. In October colocation, managed hosting and disaster recovery services provider ColoSpace (colospace.com -> firstlight.net) successfully completed SAS 70 Type II audits at all of its six data centers in New England, making it the largest SAS 70 compliant data center provider in the region. Shortly after, data center operator and hosting provider RagingWire Enterprise Solutions (ragingwire.com -> ntt.com) announced it had completed the SAS 70 Type II audit for its fifth consecutive year.
