Dec 9, 2008 : Faltering Lycos Recommends Strato
For hosting customers "who based on the current situation would like to re-orient themselves," the companies are reportedly working on transferring domains, which they say will make the transition as easy as possible.
Strato, a subsidiary of freenet AG, is also reportedly offering a free hotline, online chat and call-back service to deal with customer questions that might arise.
The announcement says it will release more information about the partnership "mid December."
It does not offer any reasoning for the choice of Strato as an alternative, although the promise of more information to come seems to imply that negotiations between the companies have not yet concluded.
Since the original report mentioned that Lycos was looking for a buyer for some of its business units, its possible that the companies are still in the process of negotiating a financial deal of some kind, if not an outright acquisition of Lycos's hosting business.
Monday's announcement says the Lycos web hosting business will continue to operate during the first quarter of 2009.
