Nov 12, 2008 : Sun, Joyant Offer Free Bebo Hosting

📅 November 12, 2008 - Global IT company Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced it is partnering with cloud computing service provider Joyent (joyent.com ) to offer one year of free web hosting to Bebo (bebo.com) developers for hosting their applications.

Sun announced the partnership deal at Bebo's DevNite developer event in Mountain View, California on Tuesday evening.

Bebo, which was purchased by AO earlier this year, is a social networking website that features user-generated content. The website is popular in the European market.

Offered via the Sun Startup Essentials program, Sun is hoping to promote its OpenSolaris open source OS through the offer where they will be able to develop and deploy Bebo applications using Java, PHP, and Ruby on Rails, and host them on the Joyent cloud computing platform.

Developers will also have access to Sun's Web 2.0 Scalable Performance Toolkit, which features an open source workload generator and Apache Olio technology for assessing web technologies.

The toolkit is currently being developed and will feature reference implementations, performance tools and best practices, while offering support for Ruby on Rails and PHP.

Bebo also offers metrics and tools for developers, which help analyze the amount of time spent and details on the percentage of returning users to applications.

The company said that it will offer JavaScript support in a beta version for its platform, enabling developers to develop, host and deploy their applications for Bebo.

Bebo also announced its Bebo's Engage to Succeed Today Developer Challenge for new applications. The contest is open to all new applications uploaded to Bebo, where developers can compete to win one of many prizes offered by Sun, as well as the opportunity to receive some on-site promotion on Bebo.

Winners will be announced at a Bebo developer event early in 2009, says the company.
