Nov 3, 2008 : Salesforce Adds Website Hosting

rackspace.com logo📅 - Known as one of the first companies to successfully offer Software as a Service, Salesforce (salesforce.com) has unveiled Force.com Sites, which will allow customers to run their Web sites on salesforce.com's existing cloud infrastructure.

Seen as the next logical step to move beyond its core business of offering sales-automation software, the cloud computing and customer relationship management software developer announced Monday that Force.com Sites is now available in a developer preview version, letting application developers who use Salesforce's platform publish Force.com data and applications to any Web site. This further extends the reach of Salesforce into the expanding cloud computing environment, competing with heavy-weights Amazon Web Services (aws.amazon.com 👉 Total Reviews: 1

), and Microsoft (microsoft.com), which announced its cloud computing service Windows Azure last week.

Like Salesforce's currently offered services, Force.com Sites run entirely in the cloud and will make it easier for developers to re-purpose for the public the more than 85,000 business applications built on the Force.com platform. For instance, customers can build websites that are integrated with an internal business application running on Force.com but visitors can now also interact with the information.

"Force.com Sites will enable a dramatic expansion of Force.com's role in cloud computing for the enterprise," Salesforce chairman and CEO Marc Benioff said in a statement. "We expect our community to unleash entirely new kinds of applications and innovations that will truly drive our vision of 'The End of Software.'"

Examples of the uses of Force.com Sites are numerous and varied but primarily consulting firms and CRM application developers. For instance, SaaS consulting firm Bluewolf built a community networking web portal for the health-care industry enabling customer reviews, a mash up of dentist locations and information on what services they provide. Also, Force.com-based human capital management application provider Jobscience built a "new employee" on-boarding system for a hospital client that hires hundreds of new employees each year.

"Force.com Sites changes the entire paradigm for building applications," said Narinder Singh, founder and head of technology and marketing of on-demand enterprise software provider Appirio (appirio.com). "Companies no longer have to consider separate architectures and approaches depending on where the users are. Running Web sites in salesforce.com's cloud removes cost and complexity and allows companies to extend existing applications beyond their own four walls."

Salesforce allows developers to buy a domain from its site. It also incorporates Visualforce, Force.com's framework for building and deploying user interfaces, making it easy to turn applications into public websites. However, with the tag line "Publish Any Data, Any Application to Any Web Site," web hosts may not be competing with Salesforce. The company's new, public-oriented direction may make it easier for all customers to post Salesforce-generated information on their websites.

Salesforce has announced a developer preview webinar on December 2, 2008 for Force.com Sites, which is expected to be generally available in 2009, Salesforce told CNET News.

Salesforce offers its pricing based on four categories based on the webpage's monthly page views ranging from 50,000 monthly views to 1,000,000, with the option to buy more as needed.
