👈 Official Responses: 0) announced on Monday it has expanded its hosting network from 160Gbps to 210Gbps, which is part of the company's philosophy of always having twice the bandwidth capacity that is used by customer websites.
The expansion involved LeaseWeb acquiring new port capacity from a handful of telecom carriers and an Internet exchange.
LeaseWeb has purchased 10 Gigabits of additional port capacity from Tata Telecommunications, formerly Teleglobe, and Global Crossing (globalcrossing.com). TeliaSonera is delivering an additional 20GB of port capacity in LeaseWeb's hosting network.
The company also bought 10GB of new port capacity from the London Internet Exchange to offer additional peering capability, adding to the hosting network a total of 50Gbps of capacity.
"Clearly our hosting network is growing extremely fast," says Bastiaan Spandaw, LeaseWeb's network architect. "By way of example, we used just 40 Gigabits per second of bandwidth in 2006. It is not really surprising that the hosting network is growing so fast. If you have a lot of hosting capacity you attract big clients -- companies that consume a lot of bandwidth. These clients then make the hosting network grow even faster." LeaseWeb customers currently consume a total of 95Gbps of bandwidth with their dedicated hosting and colocation hosting solutions, but the company says it will reach the 100Gbps mark in a few weeks.
To ensure that it can accommodate this demand, LeaseWeb decided to expand now so that it does not "run the risk of trouble in buying port capacity" because the company might be "unable to expand the hosting network in time," says Spandaw.
LeaseWeb currently hosts streaming hosting clients and wholesale users like 123Video (123video.nl) -- the Dutch version of YouTube, and Danish streaming company Octoshape (octoshape.com).
LeaseWeb recently named Ivo Roomer the company's new support manager in the restructuring of its support division.
