) platform, and is releasing the hack to the open source community, according to BetaNews (betanews.com).

Some have seen the recent release of Google App Engine (appengine.google.com) as a way to move applications created within Google Apps to another Web host. Industry analysts say this would ultimately reduce the appeal of start-ups from an acquisition stance for any hosting service other than Google, or anyone who doesn't mind letting Google to continue hosting its data.

Amazon's Web services enables developers to easily move apps off its service, which would make a service that allows Google apps to be hosted with another Web host other than Google an attractive one.

Developer Chris Anderson has launched AppDrop.com (appdrop.com), which allows users to perform such a process. The Python-powered service does not currently offer a lot of security, is not built to scale and does not support large applications. The AppDrop website says that it is only a "proof of concept" at the moment.

However, its open source availability will likely lead to these problems being addressed. Additionally, other Web hosts are likely to become available.Right now AppDrop only supports Python, and its website says that it is only a "proof of concept" at this point.

"I don't think Amazon has anything to worry about here," says Anderson. "The slice of the pie that needs to run 25-machine Hadoop jobs is getting bigger all the time. Until Google provides open access to their real compute cluster, I don't see a threat to that."
