Rackspace Launches ?Exterminator? to Eliminate Network Attacks

👈 Official Responses: 0), a leading provider of managed Internet hosting services, announced this week that it had launched its latest innovation in data security, called ?Exterminator.?

According to Rackspace, Exterminator is a new intrusion detection system that continuously monitors the network in the company's Texas data center for signs of malicious activity. When it detects an attack attempt, Exterminator's proprietary software acts to prevent any communication between the targeted host and the attacker.
The company says it plans to implement the system in its European data center in London, England this summer, in order to ensure that anyone trying to attack either of the data centers will be banned from both.
Exterminator is Rackspace's second major security innovation in the past two months. In April, Rackspace released its ?Alamo? antidote to the Linux cracker weapon Knark. To date, more than 600 Linux users have downloaded Alamo.
Rackspace says that Exterminator is different from the systems traditionally used by colocation facilities and Web hosts, in that the servers on the company's side can still see the attempted attack, but no data will be sent back to the attacker. This means that the customers are aware of the attempts, even while their servers remain protected.
The new intrusion detection system is an added safeguard, says Rackspace, that works to enhance the benefits of other existing security precautions, such as managed firewalls from Cisco and Netscreen. Exterminator will be available to protect Rackspace's clients for no extra charge.
Rackspace says that the security of its customers? servers has been of paramount importance since day one, and that the company is always looking for ways to increase security. The company says it does what it takes to maintain a 93% customer satisfaction rate.
