The project, called NorthLine, arrives as operators reconsider where networks should sit relative to compute clusters, power availability, and increasingly distributed enterprise environments. The route is expected to enter service by late 2026 and support high-capacity optical services.
The immediate story sounds straightforward enough. Another fiber build. Another route added to an already dense telecommunications map.

📅 - Lumen Acquires Alkira for Cloud Connectivity Control Plane - Lumen is buying cloud networking company Alkira for $475 million, adding a software control layer designed to orchestrate enterprise connectivity across clouds, carriers, and data centers. The acquisition reflects a broader shift happening across enterprise infrastructure as AI workloads strain traditional networking models and force telecom operators to rethink how networks are built, provisioned, managed, and monetized globally today.
For years, telecom infrastructure operated largely out of sight. Fiber networks expanded, cloud traffic exploded, and enterprises stitched together increasingly fragmented architectures across hyperscalers, branch offices, SaaS providers, and private [...]
📅 - Lumen Report Flags Network Layer as New Cyber Front - Cyber defenders are losing ground to attackers operating beyond traditional visibility, according to a new report from Lumen, which warns that the most critical signals of modern cyberattacks now emerge upstream in network infrastructure rather than on compromised endpoints, marking a fundamental shift in how organizations must approach cybersecurity in 2026 and beyond.
Lumen Technologies has published its 2026 Defender Threatscape Report, produced by its threat intelligence unit Black Lotus Labs, outlining how cybercrime has evolved into highly coordinated, industrial-scale operations. 📅 - Lumen Brings Black Lotus Threat Intel to AWS Network Firewall - The move reflects a broader shift in cloud security strategy: rather than focusing solely on detecting threats at the point of intrusion, providers are working to block malicious infrastructure earlier in the kill chain. Lumen positions itself uniquely in this space by leveraging visibility from its global IP backbone, which carries a significant portion of global internet traffic. That vantage point is at the core of the new offering.
