Korean Broadband Market Presents Major Opportunities to Foreign Vendors and Carriers

📅 - According to a new market research report, South Korea is the world's leader in broadband Internet services with over 6.25 million subscribers. Nearly 50% of online Korean households are connected to the broadband Internet services. Besides xDSL and cable access, Korean end-users are offered various alternative access modes, including LMDS, satellite and wireless LAN services, which are gaining popularity in selected and remote areas.

The new report, to be published in September by Vectis International(vectis-intl.com) and marketed by IGI, says broadband subscribers have increased over 20 fold in the past 18 months (275,000 subscribers as of year-end 1999 and over 6 million as of end June 2001).
Currently, the 3 largest broadband service providers each acquires between60,000 to 250,000 new subscribers per month The number of subscribers isexpected to be over 8 million by year-end 2001 and 11 million by year-end2002.
The proportion of Internet users that spend 10 hours or more per week on theInternet grew from 13% in 1999 to 47% at the end of 2000 As of May 2001, 55%of broadband subscribers were connected to ADSL services. Subscriberacquisition costs have declined quickly, thanks in part to increasedcompetition from local suppliers of ADSL equipment (mainly SamsungElectronics).
Several key factors explain Korea's high subscriber numbers. The Koreangovernment has always taken a hands-on approach in the development of thecountry's communications infrastructure. While the government has longsupported the deployment of extensive nationwide optical fiber networks, ithas more recently encouraged the use of specific access technologies, suchas LAN and HomePNA, which can be sourced from local equipment vendors.
The report aims to explain what other governments can learn from Korea'sdevelopment path, and how foreign vendors can better position themselves inthis increasingly competitive market.
This study contains the latest statistics on services and equipment revenuesand market shares. Profiles of all service providers and equipment vendorsare provided. As a result of months of in-country research and interviewswith service providers, carriers, ISPs, equipment vendors and regulators, the report provides insight into the future of the industry.
The table of contents, as well as additional information about the report,is available on IGI's website, www.igigroup.com.
