Aug, 2001 : Brazilian Regulator May Introduce Flat Web Tax
📅 - The Brazilian telecommunications regulator Anatel (anatel.gov.br) said Friday it may introduce a flat tariff for Internet usage by the end of the year.
The regulator is studying two different ways of payment that would letInternet users stay online for an unlimited time without greatly increasingtheir phone bills, Luiz Tito Cerasoli, the director of Anatel, saidaccording to state news agency Agencia Brasil.
A flat tariff could either be paid to either an Internet provider ordirectly to the local phone company.
"Many people who now have difficulties to access the Internet because ofhigh rates could become users," Alexandre Magalhaes, Internet analyst atIbope eRating.com agency, told AP. "But it depends on the price of the flattariff."
The measure is meant to primarily benefit Internet users in ruralcommunities, who currently often have to pay long- distance phone rates whenconnecting to the Internet, regulators said.
The number of residential Internet users in Brazil rose by five percent inJuly to 11.9 million from the previous month, Ibope eRating said Friday.Brazil has the highest number of Internet users in Latin America.
