Nov, 2001 : Cable & Wireless Signs Sonofan as GRX Customer

📅 November 6, 2001 - Cable & Wireless (cw.com), yesterday announced Sonofan(sonofan.dk), Denmark's second largest telecommunications company, as a commercial customer of its mobile data roaming service, Cable & Wireless GRX (GPRS Roaming Exchange). With this agreement, Sonofan is further extending its GPRS roaming service, which enables customers travelling abroad to access the data services they are accustomed to using in Denmark.

Cable & Wireless guarantees IP connectivity for the exchange of GPRS trafficto more than 70 countries worldwide. The agreement is an expansion of anexisting relationship between the two companies. "We are at the dawn of themobile Internet age and GPRS roaming is a significant step towards offeringour customers the full capabilities of the mobile Internet medium," saidHåkan Franzen, vice president, Sonofan. "Cable & Wireless has passed ourextensive service requirements and has qualified as a very strong partner.It offers a proven global GRX network, which has been in commercialoperation for eight months, together with technical expertise andlong-standing experience of our company and the mobile sector as a whole."

Cable & Wireless GRX launched in May 2001, using a dedicated, globalInternet protocol-based network to interconnect GPRS wireless networksworldwide as they are rolled out. This allows mobile operators to exchangedata traffic without having to establish costly point-to-point data linkswith each of their roaming partners. Cable & Wireless GRX will also support3G services, when these become available.
