EDS' PLM Software to Serve as 'Digital Backbone' of Joint Strike Fighter

📅 - Product Lifecycle Management software from EDS (eds.com) willplay a key role in helping the Lockheed Martin-led team develop the newJoint Strike Fighter (JSF) - by serving as the "digital backbone" for thelandmark project.

EDS' Metaphase software will enable the Lockheed Martin (lockheedmartin.com)team's virtual global enterprise - its 10,000 person-strong consortium ofBAE Systems, Northrop Grumman and an estimated 27 other partners andsuppliers - to create a secure, immediately accessible, web-basedenvironment to collaboratively design, build, test, deploy and track thedevelopment of the JSF.
Awarded to the Lockheed Martin-led team on Oct. 26, the Joint Strike Fighterrepresents the largest defense contract in U.S. history - potentially anorder worth over $200 billion order for next generation, multi-role advancedmilitary fighter aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, theU.K. Ministry of Defense and numerous other countries throughout the world.
A projected fleet of over 3,000 aircraft will be designed and built by aconsortium of global military aircraft manufacturers, and this fleet isexpected to see service well through the 21st century. "The JSF program isfocused on creating an aircraft that can be delivered globally to multiplecustomers in a timely manner," said Tony Affuso, president, PLM Solutions,EDS. "Our solutions create and enable the collaborative environment thatdirectly addresses critical issues such as manufacturability, digitalmock-up, the scope and scalability requirements for significant global datasharing, international cooperation, reuse of data and long-term aircraftlifecycle support."
"Compared to traditional fighter aircraft processes, the pre-award JSFmanufacturing demonstrations performed by the Lockheed team have shownsignificant improvements in tooling, manufacturing and cost reductions. Amajor factor in achieving these goals is the use of a common, digitalplatform, and that is provided through our solutions."
The Metaphase and Visualization Assembly System solutions from EDS PLMSolutions used by the JSF team for the demonstrator phase are expected to beexpanded during the engineering and manufacturing development phase toinclude the full functionality of Teamcenter - the latest collaborative toolsuite from PLM Solutions.
