EarthLink Founder Launches New Wireless Networking Provider Robert B. Marks
📅 - Boingo Wireless, Inc. (boingo.com), a new company spearheaded by EarthLink founder Sky Dayton, launched yesterday with an announcement that it would provide ultra-high-speed wireless Internet service in major public venues across the United States using a "Personal VPN" to ensure security over the connection.
The Boingo Wireless service is designed for business travelers who need high-speed access to deal with their offices. Using Wi-Fi, the pre-eminent standard for wireless broadband also known as 802.11b, Boingo Wireless is able to provide speeds of up to 11 megabits per seconds.
When the full version is available, it will find connection points by "sniffing" the air for available signals. The software will also have a profile manager, a searchable database of Wi-Fi "hot spots," an integrated authentication mechanism for logging into the Boingo network, and a one-click "Personal VPN" to secure the wireless connection.
"Wi-Fi hot spots are popping up all over the place, but until now actually finding and connecting to them was a real challenge," said Dayton, Boingo's CEO. "Our software makes locating, 'sniffing' out and connecting to these broadband wireless networks simple - point-and-click simplicity for finding and connecting to Wi-Fi networks."
