Feb, 2002 : Iona and Compaq Map Out a Joint Services Plan
📅 - Iona Technologies Inc., a business platform provider for Web Services Integration, and Compaq Computer Corp. have broadened their integration of Web services, making it easier for companies do business over the Web.
Training 300 of its global services team on Iona's Web services software, Compaq and the two companies will jointly market and sell the offering to customers worldwide. Compaq Global Services will also develop a new portfolio of business integration services based on the Orbix E2A Web Services Integration Platform and Orbix E2A Application Server Platform.
The Web services are designed to make it easier for different computer systems to share information to carry out business tasks, such as purchasing or inventory checking, over the Web. According to data from industry research firm Giga Information Group, the market for Web services is predicted to grow to $11 billion by 2005. Financial terms of the Iona-Compaq agreement were not disclosed.
Web services are held in significant regard because they join rival camps split between using Microsoft's .Net Internet technology and Java, a contending technology which was developed by Sun Microsystems Inc. Java and .Net offer opposing ways for developers to write software applications, therefore forcing companies to chose between the two. Web services, however, are designed to overcome those incompatibility problems providing software applications independent of any particular software platform.
Compaq and IONA's relationship began in 1999 around the joint development of advanced enterprise computing solutions based on IONA's integration software and Compaq's Tru64 UNIX platform. The agreement, which is the first such deal Ireland-based, Iona has signed for its Web services software, is a significant step for the company.
