Feb, 2002 : KPNQwest Wins Bid To Host German Entertainment Giant

📅 February 27, 2002 - KPNQwest NV, the Dutch data communications company announced Wednesday that it has signed a deal to provide video streaming for the Internet operations of German broadcasting giant RTL Group PLC (rtl.de).

While the financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed, KPNQuest (kpnqwest.com) says it will store RTL's video data in a KPNQwest data center in Munich, accessible by fiber optic networks.
KPNQwest spokesman Piers Schreiber said the best indication of the value of the contract is that it is volume-based. The most popular general interest web site in Germany, RTL has carried some 11 terabytes of streamed content to provide services for some 440,000 viewers Since October 2001. In the fourth quarter 2001, RTL registered 1.6 billion hits (the equivalent of 6 terabytes) and the company registered some 800 million hits alone for the first six weeks of 2002. The deal with KPNQwest was made in response to the enormous increase in demand for content and streaming services.
Using a report by Morgan Stanley, that suggests the industry average price for bandwidth is more than EUR80,000 per terabyte, the estimated value of the contract of would be EUR160,000 (138,314.54 USD).
