May 16, 2002 : Apple Unveils Rackmount Server

📅 May 16, 2002 - Computer giant Apple (apple.com) unveiled a new 1U rack-mount server featuring increased computing power and easy to use tools.

The server, named Xserve, was designed from the ground up to complement the company's Unix-based Mac OS X Server software.
The server features dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processors, each of which have 2MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) L3 cache. Apple also said Xserve is the first 1U server to use DDR SDRAM memory with up to 2GB capacity, and that up to 480GB of storage is available on four hot-plug ATA/100 drives. The server is also equipped with standard dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and is accompanied by an unlimited user license to Mac OS X Server software,
"Xserve is the result of listening to our customers," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Xserve is super easy to set up, and is easily integrated into existing networks. Plus, with its unlimited-user software license at no extra cost, Xserve is a tremendously cost effective server with real Unix under the hood."
Apple said the Xserve also features several new capabilities designed to simplify server setup and remote management. These include a new services monitoring and remote management tool, and a powerful hardware monitor that allows system administrators to remotely monitor servers, get detailed subsystem views and receive system notification alerts via pager, cell phones or PDAs.

📅 May 15, 2002 - Interliant Obtains $7.5 Million Loan for Operations - Managed infrastructure services firm Interliant, Inc. (interliant.com) said today it has secured a working loan of $7.5 million from Silicon Valley Bank, a California chartered bank with principal offices in Santa Clara, California. The underlying loan agreement has a term of one year and provides for interest at prime plus two percent on amounts borrowed. The loan is collateralized by a first-priority security interest in the company's personal property. As part of this transaction, Interliant also issued to Silicon Valley Bank a warrant to purchase 1.2 million shares of its common stock at $0.30 per share. The warrant expires five years from the date of issuance.
