May, 2003 : IBM, Akamai Release Virtualized Network Solution
📅 - IBM WebSphere (ibm.com) and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (akamai.com) yesterday announced the release of Akamai EdgeComputing Powered by WebSphere. The new software solution will enable companies to supplement their existing IT infrastructure with virtualized Internet computing capacity on a ?pay as you go? basis. The new solution is designed to deal with network congestion and spikes in traffic that slow down Web sites and Web application response times. Through the creation of a virtualized network, customers can head off network congestion by extending applications running WebSphere (IBM's Internet infrastructure software) to Akamai's network of more than 15,000 servers to handle both daily Web application traffic and unexpected spikes in demand.
The main benefit is that it will allow businesses to avoid the expense of purchasing extra peak-user servers that might otherwise sit underutilized, while simultaneously enjoying the performance and reliability of WebSphere running on Akamai's global network.
?This announcement demonstrates IBM's commitment to offer solutions with partners that help customers maintain or reduce their costs while adding new functionality and simplifying and optimizing their IT environments," said Bob Sutor, director of WebSphere infrastructure software, IBM. "With this WebSphere/Akamai solution, companies can more flexibly serve their customers and trading partners, and improve their ability to respond to market opportunities."
Both sides share an optimistic outlook. "Akamai is delighted to work with IBM to offer EdgeComputing Powered by WebSphere, which enables enterprises to consume WebSphere on demand," said Chris Schoettle, executive vice president, technology, networks and support, Akamai. "This solution allows companies to extend their WebSphere applications across Akamai's global network on a real-time, pay-as-you-go basis, without having to plan or provision capacity themselves.?
Akamai EdgeComputing Powered by WebSphere is available through IBM Global Services as well as through Akamai. The solution can be hosted by a customer, business partner, or through IBM Global Services. IBM Global Services also helps companies integrate the solution through a range of consulting services.
