OptiGlobe and Global Crossing Deliver Latin American Connection
📅 - OptiGlobe, a leading provider of Web hosting, managed services and Internet access in Latin America, announced on Monday that along with leading global telecommunication services provider Global Crossing, it had commenced operation of a high-capacity fiber optic connection between OptiGlobe's data centers in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina and multiple US peering points.
According to OptiGlobe, the project is the first fiber optic connection between major Latin American data centers and multiple Tier-1 backbone peering points in the United States.
The connection announced Monday is part of a multi-year capacity and facilities agreement between the two companies, under which Global Crossing will provide OptiGlobe with telecommunications services and connectivity between South America and the US. The service allows businesses in Brazil and Argentina to reach users in the US and Europe with performance equivalent to that of locally hosted sites.
OptiGlobe says the service is providing a level playing field for businesses in Latin America, many of which would otherwise be forced to search for connectivity outside the region.
According to OptiGlobe, the impact of the connection has been immediate and dramatic. The company says users in the US and Europe have experienced a 70 percent or greater improvement in response time when accessing sites hosted in Latin America.
The company says that, in a very real sense, it has brought the region's Web content and applications to the global net for the first time with world-class network performance.
Global Crossing says it is glad to be working with OptiGlobe to create this capability in one of the world's fastest growing regions. In Latin America, Global Crossing is now fully operational in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Panama. The company says it expects to commence services in Peru and Venezuela by the second quarter of 2001, and has applied for a license to operate in Columbia.
