IBM and California Department of Technology Partner To Create Public Cloud, CalCloud

📅 - IBM and the California Department of Technology announced today plans to create a private statewide cloud service that will store all citizens' data in one central location.

Under the $400 million, five year contract, the service, dubbed CalCloud, will allow more than 400 state and local agencies access to the service on a subscription basis through a single sign-on system, reports TechTimes.

“Transforming how the State of California delivers technology services is not only more efficient and cost effective, it will spur innovation with cloud capabilities that are open and secure,” said IBM Senior VP of Global Technology Services, Erich Clementi.

“California is setting an example for other states on how to use cloud technology to improve coordination across agencies and municipalities while reducing the barriers and duplication that can impede the delivery of government services.”

According to USA Today, the Department of Technology has been working with IBM for 18 months on the project, which was brought on by the 2011 White House Cloud First Initiative.

IBM's public sector general manager Dan Pelino says the initiative could bring positive benefits to the economy such as helping it become “healthier.”

“In 1950, 30% of people lived in cities, but by 2050 it'll be 70%, and they will be drawn to places who can compete for talent with efficient citizen-based services,” says Pelino. “Whether it's a woman who is pregnant being guided through that experience seamlessly by health agencies, or simply unemployment benefits being dispensed in a timely manner, all of that will factor into where people choose to live.”

There are currently over 20 California state departments using services offered through CalCloud.
