I've worked with Datagate for around two years and always had my suspicions they weren't the best. I'm a Linux user myself and have been concerned that their server has been going down and with their backup service.

After months of arguing, we finally got root access to our own server, which should've been provided at the start, and found out that every night, during the backup, there was a problem with the network card. This turned out to be due to the age of the Linux Kernel they're using.

I told them about the kernel problem and we were told 'I wouldn't worry that much about this to be honest. You don't have "3 year old kernel" '... despite it being released in 2009.

I then asked if our backups were ever verified, and I was told they're backed up over Samba, which raises all kinds of questions over file permissions, and that these backups are never tested, despite us paying for them.

When I've asked recently about the network card timeouts, I was told this was looked into, tested and fixed. I checked the log files, it's still happening exactly the same way, and the dates they said they tested this server; well; the log files have disappeared!

Apparently this was an 'accident', but they've said, and I quote:

"I don't care to explain my self to the person who is establishing his facts on
the basis that we are "hiding" something. Even more shocking fact is that after
all efforts from our end we are receiving e-mails like this. It looks to me like
you are deliberately trying to make us guilty, spying on us and desperately
trying to prove that we are utterly incapable."

I'm more suspicious that log files are disappearing, that I'm being told a 3 year old kernel (with existing bugs with its network card which are happening nightly) isn't a problem, and that their backups are useless.

Being as it's our dedicated server; being told we're "spying on them" seems kind of... strange.

Make up your own minds on Datagate.
