I had been looking for a budget vps provider for a while. I have some 'hobby sites' that needs a decent server with good amount of memory. When you look for decent server, you immediately think of around $40-a-month of expense. Certainly, I cannot afford that at the moment. So I kept a close eye on Web Hosting Talk website, in particular, on their vps hosting forum.
2host.com was offering a 512MB xen-based vps for a much lesser cost than other budget vps providers. It was an attractive offer for me. The company is new, but that is not a problem for me at least. I don't need any technical support from them. All I need is a good server with good uptime.
After seeing an ad on WHT forum, I contacted with them via email. They responded very quickly and after that, I placed an order for a 1G xen, 20G disk space VPS. They set it up almost instantly (within 1 hour). From my experience with other xen vps providers, I knew that it might take 2-24 hours to get it set up. I was happy to get the vps activated so quickly.
My VPS:
1G XEN, 2G Swap.
20G Disk space
Initially came with CentOS, but I installed Debian 5, 64bit via HyperVM panel.
They do not offer 32bit Debian under Xen virtualization. Also there was no minimal version of Debian when I signed up on May 22, 2009.
So far I am very satisfied with the server's performance. The unixbench results are attached with this post. Two runs have been performed the scores are:
I ran two unixbench tests on two different occasions. I currently have another budget vps whose score is around 185. Here is 2host.com's benchmark in my VPS (this site is hosted at 2host.com too.)
Run 1 score: 249.8 on May 22, 2009
Run 2 score: 244.2 on May 26, 2009
