Norid AS runs the registry for Norwegian domain names. All domains directly under .no are registered with us. In addition to processing applications we develop the domain name policy according to the needs of society.The service is regulated by the Domain Name Regulations and is supervised by the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom). Norid is not a public administrative agency, and the allocation of domain name subscriptions is based on private law. We are a neutral party, and the business is run non-profit.
Since 17 March 1987 .no has been the national top level domain for Norway. In 1989 the database consisted of 19 domain names. In 1995 the number had increased to more than 1000 domain names and in year 2000 we exceeded 50,000 registered Norwegian domain names. In 2020 we exceeded 800,000.
Norid has also been delegated the responsibility for the top level domains .bv (Bouvetøya) and .sj (Svalbard and Jan Mayen). So far these have not been opened for registration of domain names.
Norwegian domain names end in .no and are only available to Norwegian organizations and private individuals. There are hundreds of these so-called top-level domains in the world, and many of them are available to Norwegians
