(3*) 🔧 Services: Domain Registration | 🔘 Official NIC authority for .ng🔃 Selling only to resellers
Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) is the official registry operator for Nigeria’s .ng country-code top-level domain. It is not a traditional web hosting company selling shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, reseller hosting, or managed hosting. Its real role is domain registry management: maintaining the .ng registry database, supporting the registrar ecosystem, managing registry policies, operating registry-level DNS services, handling registrar accreditation, and protecting the Nigerian national domain namespace.

NiRA was founded on March 23, 2005, and later registered as an Incorporated Trustee on February 9, 2007. Its creation followed the transfer of the .ng management process under Nigeria’s national internet-governance framework. This gives NiRA a more institutional profile than a normal commercial domain registrar. They operate under the common 3R model: Registry, Registrar, Registrant. NiRA manages the registry; accredited registrars sell and manage .ng domains for end users.

For future customers, the most important point is that NiRA does not register domains directly for ordinary registrants. A business, organization, public institution, or individual wanting a .ng domain must use an accredited registrar. Those registrars may also provide web hosting, email hosting, DNS, SSL certificates, website design, WordPress hosting, or other bundled services, but those services belong to the registrar, not to NiRA itself.

The .ng namespace covers several practical domain categories, including .ng, .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng, .mobi.ng, .name.ng, and .i.ng, while restricted spaces such as government, education, military, or school-related names have additional eligibility rules. For Nigerian businesses, .ng is valuable because it gives a clear local identity, better alignment with Nigeria-focused search and branding, and often better domain-name availability than crowded global extensions.

NiRA’s own figures show a sizeable and active ecosystem, with 235,000+ domains and 150+ accredited registrars. Their January 2026 domain activity report also recorded 8,111 new registrations, 7,105 renewals, and 15,216 total domain transactions, showing that .ng remains a live and commercially relevant national namespace.

The website is mainly in English. The design is functional and information-heavy rather than modern, but the important registry resources are present: accredited registrar list, policies, agreements, forms, WHOIS/RDAP, domain lifecycle rules, support contacts, blog/news content, and guidance for becoming a registrar.

💰 Price & Cost

Retail .ng domain prices are not centralized by NiRA because end-user pricing is set by each accredited registrar. This means a .ng customer should compare registrars not only by domain price, but also by DNS features, renewal price, support quality, hosting bundles, email options, SSL availability, and payment convenience.

For registrar accreditation, NiRA lists direct institutional costs. Nigerian registrar applicants have a non-refundable application fee of NGN 50,000, while foreign applicants have a US$100 application fee. Other registrar-related costs include a NGN 10,000 corporate membership fee for Nigerian applicants, NGN 50,000 for technical training and certification, a NGN 50,000 minimum deposit to begin .ng registrations, and NGN 50,000 annual re-certification.

Payment methods for NiRA registrar-level payments are mainly bank transfer / bank deposit, with Naira accounts and a USD account available for eligible payments. For normal registrants, payment methods depend on the selected accredited registrar, not NiRA directly.

Registry-level .ng registrations do not work with a standard hosting-style money-back guarantee. Domain refunds, failed-order handling, billing adjustments, and payment disputes should be checked with the chosen accredited registrar before ordering.

🏢 Data Center

NiRA does not operate as a customer web host, so there is no shared-hosting or VPS data center offer to evaluate. Its infrastructure relevance is at the registry and authoritative DNS level.

The .ng DNS infrastructure is designed around resilience rather than a single hosting location. NiRA’s domain guidance includes secure, locally managed primary DNS with multiple Anycast servers around the world. IANA’s .ng delegation includes authoritative nameservers such as ns2.nic.net.ng, ns3.nic.net.ng, ns4.nic.net.ng, ns5.nic.net.ng, and nsa.nic.net.ng, with both IPv4 and IPv6 endpoints for several of them.

Network checks also show NiRA’s own routing presence through AS36938, with 41.222.79.0/24 associated with Nigeria Internet Registration Association and nsa.nic.net.ng inside that network space. This is relevant because it confirms that NiRA is not only a policy body; it also has registry-network infrastructure connected to the .ng namespace.

NiRA has also been working on the strategic path toward DNSSEC implementation for .ng, including benchmarking with other African ccTLD registries. This is a positive security direction, although it should not be interpreted as a commercial hosting SLA.

There is no hosting-style uptime guarantee for registrants. For .ng users, the practical reliability value comes from registry governance, distributed authoritative DNS, anycast design, and registrar-level service quality.

✍️ Customer Support

NiRA separates support by function, which is useful for a registry organization. There are contacts for accounts, administration, Abuja administration, technical support, and accreditation. This structure is appropriate because .ng issues can involve very different cases: registrar accreditation, domain policy questions, technical DNS matters, complaints, and payment/accounting matters.

For ordinary domain customers, first-line support normally comes from the selected accredited registrar. NiRA becomes more relevant when the matter is registry-level, policy-related, accreditation-related, or connected to complaints and domain governance.

Support channels include email, phone, and departmental contact lines. This is practical for registry matters, but it is not the same as a commercial 24/7 hosting support desk.

🔨 Control Panel

NiRA does not provide a hosting control panel such as cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, or a VPS dashboard. That is expected, because NiRA is the .ng registry rather than a hosting provider.

End users manage domain registrations through their accredited registrar’s platform. Registrars handle registration, renewal, transfers, cancellations, and registrant data updates. NiRA provides the registry layer, registrar accreditation process, WHOIS/RDAP services, policy documents, and domain lifecycle framework.

For customers, this means the registrar choice matters a lot. The practical control-panel experience, DNS editor, renewal interface, invoice system, and hosting dashboard will depend entirely on the registrar selected.

🎯 Conclusion

NiRA is best understood as the trust and governance layer behind Nigeria’s .ng domain namespace. It is not the place to buy a hosting package directly, but it is the authority that makes the .ng ecosystem work.

The strongest points are the long operational history since 2005, official registry status, broad accredited-registrar base, structured domain policies, registrar accreditation framework, WHOIS/RDAP availability, and distributed DNS infrastructure. For businesses targeting Nigeria, a .ng domain can be a strong branding and localization choice.

The main limitation is that customer experience varies by registrar. Prices, payment methods, hosting bundles, DNS tools, renewal handling, refunds, and support quality are not uniform. A good .ng purchase decision should therefore start with NiRA’s accredited registrar list, then continue by comparing registrars carefully.
