(3*) 🔧 Services: Data Center⇔ Redirected from ecodatacenter.se
EcoDataCenter is a Swedish data center operator founded in April 2014, headquartered in Falun, Sweden. Børge Granli was one of the founders of the original EcoDC business. The company has evolved from an early sustainability-oriented data center project into a substantial digital infrastructure provider focused particularly on artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, cloud platforms and large enterprise deployments. Peter Michelson is the current CEO.
The corporate structure is headed by EcoDC Holding AB (publ), registration number 559491-2098. Areim Investment DC AB is the principal owner, with Swedish Nordic fund manager Areim providing the wider investment platform behind the business. EcoDataCenter has expanded quickly and now has approximately 100 employees.
This is not a conventional web hosting provider. EcoDataCenter does not concentrate on Linux shared hosting, Windows hosting, retail VPS accounts, domain registrations, website builders or inexpensive dedicated servers. Its business operates much deeper within the infrastructure layer, through colocation, wholesale data center capacity, HPC and supercomputing infrastructure, AI infrastructure, Smart Hands and Remote Hands services. Its natural customer base therefore consists of enterprises, cloud platforms, AI companies, research organizations and other businesses deploying substantial computing environments.
Colocation accommodates customer-owned hardware inside professionally operated data center facilities. Configurations can range from high-density racks in shared environments to much larger dedicated installations. Renewable electricity, strong physical security, scalable power capacity, flexible rack configurations and on-site technical expertise make the service suitable for demanding infrastructure. Service availability and performance requirements are handled through contractual SLAs, while PUE targets can also form part of the agreement.
The Wholesale service is designed for substantially larger deployments. Customers can use a dedicated room, suite, module or potentially an entire building, giving large infrastructure operators considerable independence without the capital expenditure and long development process involved in constructing a private data center. Continuous monitoring and modular expansion allow capacity to increase alongside computing requirements.
HPC and supercomputing have become central parts of EcoDataCenter's operation. The Falun infrastructure supports high-density AI, machine learning, deep learning, large-language-model and other computationally intensive workloads. Direct liquid cooling already operates in production, while the infrastructure can accommodate both conventional air-cooled systems and fully liquid-cooled deployments. Immersion cooling can also be supported where appropriate.
One of the more notable installations was Europe's first liquid-cooled NVIDIA DGX GB200 deployment, completed together with DeepL. EcoDataCenter has also supported substantial AI infrastructure for CoreWeave, demonstrating the scale of the computing environments that can be accommodated.
Smart Hands and Remote Hands are particularly valuable for customers managing equipment from another city or country. On-site technicians can handle cabling, rack installation, hardware-related work and other physical infrastructure tasks without requiring the customer to dispatch its own staff to Sweden. The service can be adapted to the operational requirements of individual deployments.
EcoDataCenter owns and operates its principal data center infrastructure and manages design, construction and operations internally. Security combines physical barriers, controlled access, modern protection systems and continuous surveillance. The company holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 certifications, together with EN 50600 validation, giving enterprise customers a strong compliance foundation.
Sustainability is integrated directly into the engineering model. The Falun data center operates with 100% renewable electricity, approximately 75% hydropower and 25% wind power. Wood has also been used extensively as a structural construction material, helping reduce embodied carbon compared with more conventional data center construction. Waste heat is recovered instead of simply being discharged, and server-generated heat in Falun has been reused in the production of wood pellets.
The website is modern and responsive, with English serving as the main international language. Swedish corporate and financial information is also available. Because services are negotiated as enterprise infrastructure contracts rather than purchased as standardized hosting packages, there is no conventional hosting shopping cart, retail currency selector or instant online plan ordering process.
A major restructuring took place during 2025, when the two Stockholm data centers and the Piteü facility were sold. EcoDataCenter subsequently concentrated its investment strategy on larger AI and cloud campuses, with Falun remaining the primary operational facility and Borlänge becoming the company's major expansion project.
The next stage of growth is considerable. EcoDataCenter 2 in Borlänge is being developed on the former Kvarnsveden paper mill site. Construction began in September 2025, with the first phase planned for completion during 2027. In August 2026, EcoDataCenter announced another Dalarna campus in Smedjebacken, covering approximately 52 hectares. The project has an initial planned power capability of 150 MW, with potential for further expansion. Construction is expected to begin after the permitting process is completed in 2027, with the first data center targeted to become operational in 2029.
💰 Price & Cost
EcoDataCenter works with an enterprise quotation model rather than fixed public hosting prices. Colocation, wholesale and HPC projects vary substantially according to rack density, power requirements, cooling technology, floor space, redundancy, connectivity and technical support, making individually negotiated contracts much more appropriate than standardized monthly hosting packages.
There is no consumer-oriented checkout process, standard retail money-back guarantee or public list of payment methods. Commercial terms are handled as part of the individual infrastructure agreement. Customers therefore need to contact the sales department with their required capacity, power density, location, cooling configuration and service-level requirements before receiving a commercial proposal.
Wholesale customers can scale from individual dedicated areas to complete modules or considerably larger environments. This structure can reduce the capital expenditure associated with building a private facility while retaining much of the flexibility and operational control of dedicated infrastructure.
🏢 Data Center
The center of EcoDataCenter's current infrastructure is EcoDataCenter 1 in Falun, approximately 200 km northwest of Stockholm. The facility has 80 MW of total available power and operates with a stated PUE of 1.2. Its electricity supply is entirely renewable, with approximately 75% originating from hydropower and 25% from wind power.
Falun is especially well suited to high-density AI and HPC installations. The facility can accommodate air cooling, direct liquid cooling and specialized immersion environments. Pre-installed chilled-water infrastructure, redundant cooling paths and UPS-supported cooling distribution provide the engineering foundation required for dense computing clusters.
The physical infrastructure is also prepared for unusually heavy modern AI systems. Switchgear flooring can accommodate loads ranging from approximately 2,200 kg/m² to 8,000 kg/m². Modular data halls can begin at around 300 m² and 1.5 MW and can be interconnected as customer requirements increase. Power-feed configurations can likewise be expanded as new racks and clusters are introduced.
Connectivity is another strength. Arelion operates a Point of Presence at the Falun campus and upgraded its connectivity for the Nordic AI network with scalable 400G and 800G coherent optical technology. Approximate wavelength round-trip latency from Falun is around 3 ms to Stockholm, 27 ms to London and 31 ms to Paris.
EcoDataCenter 2 in Borlänge represents the company's largest expansion project. The approximately 200,000 m² site uses the former Kvarnsveden paper mill property and its existing industrial infrastructure. It is intended for very large AI and HPC deployments and has a long-term design potential of up to 600 MW. This figure represents planned development capacity rather than fully commissioned capacity already in operation.
The company's main data center locations are now Falun and Borlänge. Stockholm continues to serve as an office location, while the former Stockholm data centers and the Piteü facility were divested during 2025.
A third campus is planned in Smedjebacken, Dalarna. Announced on August 25, 2026, the approximately 52-hectare project starts with a planned 150 MW power capability and has room for further expansion. Construction is expected to begin after permits are completed in 2027, with the first operational phase targeted for 2029.
Redundant power, backup systems, cooling infrastructure, physical security and round-the-clock operations form the basis of the service environment. Customer deployments operate under individual SLA agreements that can include uptime commitments and operational service requirements. There is no single universal uptime percentage covering every contract, since availability commitments depend on the selected infrastructure and negotiated SLA.
✍️ Customer Support
Customer support operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which is essential for business-critical colocation and computing infrastructure. Technical assistance is available through support@ecodatacenter, while commercial inquiries can be directed to sales@ecodatacenter. The central telephone number is +46 (0)10 145 00 00.
Sales inquiries have a target response time of within 24 hours. Larger projects receive direct assistance from sales and engineering personnel, an important advantage when deployments involve substantial electrical capacity, liquid cooling, network architecture, physical layout and long-term expansion planning.
Smart Hands and Remote Hands provide practical operational support after equipment has been installed. Local technicians can perform physical work such as cabling, rack installation and other infrastructure tasks, reducing the need for customers to maintain permanent technical staff near the Swedish facilities.
🔨 Control Panel
EcoDataCenter does not use cPanel, Plesk or another conventional web hosting control panel as part of its standard infrastructure services.
Customers manage their own servers, operating systems, virtualization platforms and applications, while EcoDataCenter handles the underlying physical data center environment, including power, cooling, security and contracted operational services. Management therefore follows an enterprise infrastructure model rather than the account-based control panel structure normally associated with shared hosting or VPS services.
🎯 Conclusion
EcoDataCenter is best suited to organizations requiring serious data center infrastructure rather than conventional website hosting. Its strongest areas are high-density colocation, wholesale capacity, HPC, AI infrastructure, liquid cooling, renewable power and technically mature energy-efficiency practices.Falun already combines 80 MW of available power, a 1.2 PUE, advanced physical security, 24/7 technical operations and strong support for dense AI computing clusters. Borlänge adds very substantial future capacity, while the Smedjebacken project extends the long-term expansion strategy further across Sweden's Dalarna region.
The divestment of Stockholm and PiteĂĽ during 2025 also clarified the company's direction. EcoDataCenter is concentrating investment on fewer but significantly larger campuses designed around AI, HPC, hyperscale and cloud infrastructure rather than maintaining a wider collection of smaller facilities.
For an individual website owner searching for inexpensive shared hosting, a VPS or a standard managed dedicated server, EcoDataCenter is not the right type of provider. For enterprises, cloud operators, AI companies and research organizations that need substantial power density, scalable colocation, liquid cooling and renewable energy, the company offers a particularly strong infrastructure proposition. Pricing and precise availability guarantees depend on individual contracts, so direct consultation is necessary before making a meaningful cost or SLA comparison.
