(3*) 🔧 Services: Domain Registration | 🔘 Official NIC authority for .bm
Bermuda NIC (bermudanic.bm) is the official registry service for Bermuda's .BM country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). Its role is specialized rather than comparable with a conventional web hosting company: BermudaNIC handles registration and administration of Bermuda domain names for the Registry General Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Bermuda.

The .BM namespace dates back to March 31, 1993, when the country-code domain was originally delegated. Bermuda College was the original sponsoring organization, while responsibility later moved to the Registrar General. ICANN formally approved redelegation of .BM to the Registrar General of Bermuda on October 16, 2007. The modern BermudaNIC self-service registration system followed in 2016, making domain registrations, renewals, contact management and nameserver changes available through an online account.

BermudaNIC manages the main public Bermuda namespaces .bm, .com.bm, .org.bm, .net.bm and .edu.bm. These extensions are particularly relevant to businesses, organizations and individuals wanting a clear Bermuda identity rather than a generic international domain.

Registration is intended for applicants with an appropriate connection to Bermuda, including Bermuda organizations and residents, rather than operating as a completely unrestricted global domain extension. Domains are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to registry eligibility, validation and dispute requirements.

The registration process is account based. Customers create a BermudaNIC account, submit a domain request, complete the required validation and then manage the registration online. Contact information and authoritative nameservers can be changed through the same interface, making routine domain administration considerably easier than the older manually processed registry model.

The distinction between the history of .BM and the current BermudaNIC platform is important. The national domain has existed since 1993, while the present online registration environment dates from 2016. Registry responsibility had already been transferred to Bermuda's Registrar General before the present self-service platform was introduced.

BermudaNIC is primarily aimed at the local Bermuda market and operates in English. No multi-language/localized version exists.

The registry infrastructure has gone through several platform changes. The online self-service system was introduced in 2016, followed by another platform migration during 2023. That transition created account-management complications for some registrants, and a separate renewal problem in January 2024 temporarily affected several Bermuda domains connected with ISP-managed renewals. The registrations were subsequently restored. These incidents concerned registry administration and domain renewal rather than website hosting infrastructure.

💰 Price & Cost

The established fee structure is $100 for a new domain registration and $65 for a one-year renewal. Registration and renewal operate on an annual basis, which is typical of a national domain registry but considerably more expensive than many common generic extensions.

The higher price makes most sense for customers that specifically value a Bermuda identity. A .BM domain provides a direct national association that generic extensions such as .com cannot provide.

Online credit-card payment became the standard method for BermudaNIC registrations and renewals when the self-service system was introduced. Domain payments moved away from older in-person and online banking arrangements toward payment through the BermudaNIC customer account.

There is no conventional hosting-style money-back guarantee. A refund can apply when an application fails validation and the requested domain is not registered, which is appropriate for a registry transaction rather than a recurring web hosting subscription.

🏢 Data Center

BermudaNIC does not provide customer hosting servers or sell data-center services. Its critical infrastructure is instead the authoritative .BM DNS registry network responsible for resolving the entire Bermuda country-code domain.

The .BM delegation uses six authoritative nameservers: a0.bm.afilias-nst.info, a2.bm.afilias-nst.info, b0.bm.afilias-nst.org, b2.bm.afilias-nst.org, c0.bm.afilias-nst.info, d0.bm.afilias-nst.org

All six support both IPv4 and IPv6. Technical registry infrastructure is associated with Afilias (afilias.info) and Identity Digital (identity.digital), using distributed anycast DNS rather than depending on a single physical server location.

Part of this infrastructure operates through AS12041 โ€“ Afilias, Inc., with additional registry infrastructure associated with AS207266 โ€“ Identity Digital Limited. The use of anycast improves DNS resilience by distributing authoritative service across multiple network locations.

The .BM zone is DNSSEC-enabled, adding cryptographic validation between the DNS root and the Bermuda country-code zone. This is an important technical feature for a national registry because it helps protect DNS resolution against forged or manipulated responses.

A conventional hosting uptime SLA does not apply to BermudaNIC because it operates as a domain registry rather than a web hosting provider.

✍️ Customer Support

Customer assistance is handled through the Registry General and BermudaNIC. The primary domain contact is dnsmanager@gov.bm, with telephone support available at +1 441 297-7708 for .BM registration and account-related matters.

Account management includes password recovery through the registered email address, while the online system handles most routine domain administration directly.

For registry-level matters, Registrar General Aubrey Pennyman is associated with the administrative contact apennyman@gov.bm and telephone number +1 441 297-7662.

Support is structured around government registry administration rather than the 24/7 live-chat model commonly associated with commercial hosting companies.

🔨 Control Panel

BermudaNIC uses its own web-based domain management interface rather than cPanel, Plesk or another hosting control panel.

Customers log in with their registered email address and password and can manage their .BM domains, update contact information and change authoritative DNS nameservers. The interface is dedicated to domain administration and does not provide website files, databases, PHP management, mailboxes or server configuration.

Purchasing a BermudaNIC domain therefore does not include web hosting or email hosting. Those services need to be arranged separately, after which the appropriate nameservers or DNS settings can be assigned to the .BM domain.

🎯 Conclusion

Bermuda NIC is the authoritative service for customers who specifically need a .BM domain and qualify under Bermuda's registration requirements. Its main strengths are direct government registry administration, a long-established national namespace, self-service domain management, DNSSEC and a resilient authoritative DNS infrastructure using multiple IPv4 and IPv6 anycast nameservers.

The main limitations are the restricted eligibility requirements and the relatively high $100 initial registration fee and $65 annual renewal fee compared with mass-market generic domains. BermudaNIC is also strictly a domain registry, so website and email hosting must be purchased separately.

For Bermuda businesses, organizations and residents that want a strong local identity, .bm, .com.bm, .org.bm, .net.bm and .edu.bm remain the most direct way to establish an official Bermuda-focused Internet presence.
