I switched to Nexcess from a shared host because I wanted a host that could withstand some of the surges and peaks in traffic my website experience.

I explained this to Nexcess and they put me on a dedicated server, dual xeon, 2.8ghz with 3 gigs of ram. At the first peak in traffic the site went down for several hours, costing me several thousands of dollars in business.

The sad part is, my website only experienced 1k visits over the course of the day, and their DEDICATED server still crapped out. My old host, Lunarpages.com could handle much more traffic on their shared servers.

Their email-only customer service was prompt but they couldn't tell me why their server crashed with so little traffic. Needless to say I canceled my service due to the poor performance, yet Nexcess still billed me for an extra month of hosting, even though I canceled literally minutes after my plan was renewed.

Nexcess and Eliterax may be work for you if your site doesn't get any more than 1k visits per day. If you run a business or a website that requires basic uptime, then stay away from this sloppy operation.
At the time the dell dual xeon line was the best we had. This was also before the SIP plans were created and when Magento itself was still very young and much more resource intensive than it is now. The server that they were on when they first signed up with us was a Celeron server for $49.95/month, lowest server we offered and when they learned of their upcoming traffic spike from being mentioned on the oprah show, they asked us if we could set them up with something higher to handle the spike. We provided them with a Dell 2850 with Dual Xeon processors. The server did indeed spike, I'm not sure exactly where they got the 1000 hits number from, but I have no way of knowing if that was accurate or not, but during the initial spike there was a hardware issue with the box. Within an hour the hardware issue was fixed and the server withstood the rest of the spikes that day that occurred from the show promotion. Once the day was over, they stayed on the box at no charge for several days deciding what to do with the site. They ended up having us move them back to being live on their single Celeron box and we moved their site back and never charged them for the use of the 2850 because of the incident that occurred. They did end up cancelling with us and indeed were charged another month because as our terms of service states clearing when signing up with us, cancellations should be in writing 30 days prior to your renew date and any invoice that is created prior to cancel is still the clients responsibility to pay. We were open and up front with them about all issues, responded to their problems as quickly as possible and didn't charge them for the upgraded server usage due to the problems.
