Dec 14, 2004 : Massachusetts Man Flees Federal Charges

📅 - A Sudbury, Massachusetts man is believed to have fled the country with his family after a federal jury indicted him on charges of cybercrime, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Jay R. Echouafni, 37, is likely to have fled to Morocco, the country he emigrated from as a teenager, FBI officials said in the report.

Echoufani was reportedly involved in various controversial, but not illegal, business ventures, and his most recent venture, Orbit Communications, appeared to be doing well. According to the report, Echoufani lived quite extravagantly, building a home theatre in his house and installing plasma screen televisions in many of the rooms in the 6,500 square-foot house he lived in.
According to the indictment, Echouafni allegedly hired five hackers to launch a cyberattack against three business competitors, causing more than $2 million dollars in damage and temporarily disrupting the Web sites for online retailer Amazon and the Department of Homeland Security.
The indictment alleges that in October of 2003, Echouafni launched an electronic attack on weaKnees.com, an online seller of digital video recorders based in Los Angeles, that brought its Web site down and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage. The attack reportedly followed Echouafni's failed efforts to consummate a deal with the company to distribute his upgrade kits for digital recorders. Echouafni allegedly enlisted cyber-mercenaries to attack two other business competitors.
Echouafni, who is now on one of the FBI's most wanted lists, is the first person charged with using the Internet to attack a business competitor, the report said.
