Mar 21, 2005 : Arrests Made in Malicious Virus Attack

📅 - According to reports, two men were arrested last Friday in connection to a virus attack that left an estimated 100 Web sites stranded and causing $1.2 to $2 million in damage. The computer attacks were orchestrated by a Southfield, Michigan man with the intention of crippling competitors to his online sportswear business and were deployed by a New Jersey teen, according to federal and state authorities.

"This was a malicious attack that had widespread practical and financial consequences. The damage literally rolled across the country and beyond," US Attorney Christopher J. Christie said in a statement.

Jason Saleh Arabo, 18, was arrested by FBI agents in Detroit and charged with conspiring to transmit a program to damage a computer. A 17-year-old boy in Edison, Middlesex County, was arrested by New Jersey State Police and charged with one count of computer theft by denial of service. Arabo was released on $50,000 bond, while the boy is currently being held at the Middlesex County juvenile detention center.

Arabo operated two sports clothing companies, www.customleader.com and www.jerseydomain.com, from his home. He reportedly met the teen online last June in a chat room, commissioning him to conduct the attacks in return for some of the historic uniform reproductions he sold, along with high-end sneakers and a watch.
