Dec 20, 2002 : Web Hosting Operators Arrested

Dec 20, 2002 - According to recent reports, the operators of the Dallas-area Web hosting company InfoCom Corp., which operates the Web sites for the Al Jazeera television network and dozens of other Muslim organizations, have been arrested by Federal agents.

The four brothers who operate the company were reportedly arrested on Wednesday by members of the North Texas Joint Terrorsim Task Force, and are charged in a 33-count indictment that includes allegations of money laundering and illegal trade practives.
Reports identified the arrested men as Ghassan Elashi, Basman Elashi, Bayan Elashi and Hazim Elashi. Bayan Bashi is reportedly listed as administrator for, which hosts the web site for pan-Arabic news channel Al Jazeera.
InfoCom officials have denied any wrongdoing or terrorist connections. In addition to providing Web hosting and a range of related services, the company exports computer and information technology purchases, including phone networks and ISP systems, to organizations around the world.
The company's exports were the focus of a raid last year, following allegations that InfoCom had exported restricted technology to Libya. At the time, InfoCom hosted a protest by Muslim-Americans at its headquarters, calling the raid part of an anti-Muslim witch hunt.
