Feb 18, 2003 : .uk.co Domain Shut Down

📅 - According to reports posted Monday, the .uk.co domain was removed form the Internet Monday morning without warning, leaving more than 8,000 users and businesses without a Web presence or email.

The uk.co (http://www.uk.co) Web site, contains a posting from the operator of the .co TLD, the University of the Andes in Bogota, Colombia, saying that Net Registrar, the registrar for the .uk.co domains, had failed to agree to the terms of a proposed arrangement, and was therefore ?no longer entitled to operate uk.co sub-domains.?
Net Register said that it had been fielding angry calls from domain owners, and suggested that it would be required to take legal action. Reports suggest that the legal action may be part of a larger battle, between the university and the Columbian government, over the domain.
The university announced in June of 2001 that it would sell the domain's rights, attempting a profit similar to the one the island of Tuvalu gained from selling the rights to its .tv domain. But the attempt at the privatization of the .co domain bothered the Columbian government, which announced that the Minister of Communications in Columbia would take over administration of the domain no later than December 31, 2003.
The university informed Net Registrar of the impending transfer in December of 2002 and tried to draft a new arrangement with the company. At that point, Net Register reportedly stopped new registrations and began seeking assurances to the continued operation of .uk.co domains.
The matter may be further illuminated this week when a Columbian judge rules on whether Net Registrar has any further rights to the domain.
