This Is How Much Energy US Data Centers Use Compared to an American Home

📅 - Data centers consume a lot of energy – A LOT. So much that numbers alone don't really convey the amount. Something we all understand is household energy use. Turning on the A/C, TV, electric blanket, night light – these are energy uses we're familiar with. Understanding data center energy usage is easier when you use household energy consumption as a comparison.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says the average American home uses around 10,932 kilowatthours (kWh) each year – an average of about 911 kWh each month. Compare that to the amount U.S. data centers use in a year – about 70 billion kWh – and it's clear just how much energy these centers require.

Data centers account for 2% of the country's total energy consumption. It would take 6.4 million American households to consume this much energy in a year.
