########################################################################
0. Introduction.

Whoop ee doo! Whoop ee day! Another November, another October newsletter,
and as you can see from the TOC (that's "Terms of Content") above, we've
got a LOT of "NEW" features this month. It's no September, but what are
the chances of two Septembers in a row, anyway? A little under 13%.

Now don't get TOO excited about all those "NEW"s you see up there.
Every good advertiser knows that if something is ACTUALLY new and cool,
you don't have to ram that fact down the public's collective throat..
they'll get it and be suitably impressed.

In the words of Disco Stu, "Disco Stu don't advertise."

It's kind of like how if you're an ACTUAL expert, you don't call
yourself an "expert." Or if you're a REAL scientist you're not an "earth
scientist" or a "social scientist", you're just a "chemist" or a
"physicist"

I, personally, am a computer scientist, and these, personally, are *NEW*
features..

########################################################################
1. New Data Center!

Not that we don't just LOVE our old one or anything. But you know how it
is, like an old lover, sometimes you just start to grow apart. But,
alas, we can't bear to part ways... even if they're doing us wrong,
it's just so comfortable and familiar. So, like any disenfranchised soul
we haven't straight-out dumped our data spouse, but instead taken on a
new mistress.

The Garland Building's had her troubles, but we are regaining confidence
she'll be there for us in the hot days ahead (when LA will inevitably
lose power). In the meantime, we're spending our sultry nights with the
new gal in town, Alchemy.net's new LAX facility.

The plan so far is to sneak our dedicated servers off to this cheeky
temptress beginning next week, freeing some space up in Garland's tight
quarters. Then, as things start to loosen up in her basement, we'll be
able to finally re-arrange our hardware as we see fit, which should
allow us to at last satisfy the primal urge we have to grow that has
been repressed for oh so very, very long!

All this two-timing will probably lead to better performance all
around! We'll be able to re-jigger our network so more traffic is
localized, we'll be able to add EVEN more web, mail, and database boxes
than we can now, and who knows.. we may even start offering REAL
dedicated servers again some day.

(Though I wouldn't handcuff myself to the bedpost in anticipation of
that bad boy.)

########################################################################
2. New No/Less Email Blocks!

I know, I know, I know.. it just wouldn't be DreamHost if every once in
a while your mail wasn't blocked by spamcop, comcast, aol, or hotmail
under accusations of being a spammer.

Well, I guess we're just not DreamHost! Maybe I type too soon, but it
cautiously seems as though we've got this whole "getting your IPs black-
listed for hosting spammers" thing licked!

It was a long, hard, firm process, but the end result seems to be we're
pretty much in the clear now! The final step was moving all our auto-
responders off to their own email server. Spamcop is pretty adamant that
"if you have an auto-responder, you are a spammer". And, since a lot of
our customers seem to use our auto-responder feature, we didn't want to
take it away just to make Spamcop happy.

So now, our one auto-responder server is pretty much permanently black-
listed by Spamcop. The bad news is, people who use Spamcop as a blacklist
aren't going to receive your auto-responses anymore (oooo, that's SOOOO
bad!). The good news is, they will receive ANY other email you send them
through our servers! And even more gooder, you can still have auto-
responders at DreamHost!

If we even ARE DreamHost.

3. New Dallas and Josh Talk at ISPCON!

Well, the day finally came. Dallas and I have been invited to be on a
panel discussion at ISPCON in Santa Clara next Wednesday, November 8th
at 4:15pm. DreamHost has finally jumped the shark.

Cause you know, once you rock the living fudgebowl out of one talk,
people are going to hear about it. And they're going to be impressed.
And THEY'RE going to want you to talk at THEIR convention, graduation,
state of the union address, bat mitzvah, superbowl half time show.

And then there will be SO many offers, we'll have to start turning them
down. So they'll start offering money. Small amounts.. a penny at first,
then, $1, $5, $10, $25, $50, $75, $100, $200, $300, $400, $500, $750...
"NO DEAL" we'll shout.. and wait for better offers. Before you know it,
the stakes will be high. $1,000! No, $5,000! $10,000! $25,000 a talk!

We'll start to consider it. But NO!!! We've only got to open two more
cases.. let's just GO FOR IT! The stakes rise.. $50K a talk, $75K a talk,
$100K! Soon, we're making more money TALKING about hosting than we do
HOSTING. Which was really the plan all along.

Of course, the quality of our hosting will drop like a feather in a
vacuum. If you want to witness the demise first hand and chat-chit
before/after/during the panel, just GO!

4. New Get BONO!

What the heck? Somebody threw this category in here, I swear. What the
heck? Now I have to make up some kind of filler to match I guess.

Um, so yeah, pro bono work! Go do some lawyering for free! Hooray! Or
maybe they're talking about Sonny! What about that guy, isn't he in
Africa now or something? Good for him! Well wait, here's something else
about him:

http://defectivebydesign.org/petition/bonopetition

Looks like those crazy Anti-DRM guys are trying to get the U2 dude to
speak out against DRM! Good luck fellas.. the petition is now at 5160 as
I write this with a keyboard. I signed it! Well, sorta. I just entered
my info. It's confusing how it works too.. just make up a new username
and only your email, country, and postal code are required.

Ooooh.. speaking of taking a stand against DRM!

Sell your own files via our Files Forever service! Remember that PR
masterpiece from last month? It's just a $2.50/GB ONE-TIME FEE to store
any file FOREVER! EVEN if you cancel hosting with us someday (and you
will!) you'll ALWAYS be able to access any file you've backed up to
Files Forever at the same URL, and even share it with friends for free!

Not to mention sell it to strangers for a tidy PROFIT! Try it again for
the first time:

########################################################################
5. New Widget!

At this point you may have noticed I'm almost ENTIRELY through the NEW-
sletter without revealing a single actual new feature! Pretty sweet.
Well, here's one! Although WE didn't make it... double sweet!

http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=40375

It's a "widget" that you can run on your Windows or OS X desktop that
keeps you up to date on new posts to our Status Blog or our Fun Crazy
Blog, and also includes a wiki search form for all your crazy queries
and theories about us!

If all desktops came pre-installed with this baby, I'd be able to can
the REST of our tech support team. And pass the savings on to YOU, my
cayman islands bank account!

########################################################################
6. New DHSOTM!

Wasn't this an awesome newsletter? If you think so, I'll bet ALL your
friends would too.. why don't you MASS FORWARD it to them? They love it
when you do that!

They love it so much that there's now a website where they can go to
read ALL those mass forwards ALL the time from the comfort of their own
IE7! And vote on their favorites! And add their own! And win the
DreamHost Site of the Month for October, 2006!

http://www.fwditon.com/

It's weird, there's no flash. I guess it's pretty Web 2.0-y instead, and
I should know, I'm doing a panel on it with Dallas at ISPCON. For free.
For me. You still have to pay to attend.

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.dhsotm

Is where all you Web 2.000000 types go to get such infamy as only can be
provided approximately once a month in this e-Venue you are now done
reading!
