OVH Provide hardware and bandwith, not software

OVH provide hardware and bandwith and they do it extremely well for the best price of the market. For this price they don't provide managed servers, nor any software service. This missunderstanding is the cause of all disapointed customers I see here. Most of unhappy customers are people who think OVH have to provide working server. No, they provide working hardware, wich is different.

I have 3 OVH servers for more than 7 years and I'm in charge of a dozen more for my customers. During this time all hardware failures (hard drives and ram) have been repaired in less than 40 min. We experienced only 2 big problems, one was a major failure in a shared datacenter that caused big routing problems in all European datacenters during one afternoon (not OVH fault), the other was a problem with OVH failover IP system, they repaired it after 3 hours.

If you rent a server, you will have a control panel to partition drives according to your wishes and install or reinstall the operating system of your choice (dozen available already configured). Then you are sent a mail with admin password and IP and then it's up to you. You have to know what you are doing or pay an admin.

The things I like :
- Alternative homemade hardware, smart cooling system allow them to offer very low rates. And they are quite environment friendly.
- The bandwith is incredible. Even at crowded hours I always get more than the guaranted bandwith. They don't limit monthly trafic, I have sent dozen and dozen terabytes a month without even a warrning. The traffic between servers inside OVH is always the maximum of 1gb (112MB/s)
- They are located in europe and offer IP from lot of european country, so if you host spanish website on spanish IP google will rank it better.
- You can boot your server from network or user virtual KVM if there is a problem, but I never had to use it.
- Failover IP : It is a Virtual IP system, You got an IP that you can redirect to any of your servers. You get 3 virtual IP each time you order a new server and you keep them forever. Note to the admins : you HAVE to use them and serve websites from one of these IPs. When you will upgrade to newer server (and you will) you just need to redirect this IP to the new server.
- Options include virtual bay, failover IP, ftp backup, more minimum bandwith, and even geeky things like USB key or additional USB hard drive plugged in your server (there a usb port on the motherboard, why not using it ?)....

The drawbacks :
- Ovh does not provide managed servers, even if you wish to pay for it. They just hold a list of independent professionals and companies who can manage your server for you.
- Once you start suscribing an offer, it's price won't change. After some years you end up paying an old server the price of a 4 time more powerfull recent offer.
- The minimum guaranteed bandwith (200Mb on medium offers) is shared accross all the servers of your company (they check the ID when opening account). But this is a minimum guaranted, you can generaly use more. And you can buy additional guaranted bandwith if you are having intense traffic.
- The control panel is not very user friendly at first, but once you know it, it's ok.
- They are very strict regarding payment, if you don't pay, your server will be cut the minute it expires.
- They are only in europe, but they are opening service in north america (east). And there is no doubt they will explode the market there.

Finally I will speak about the support. I think they have a scoring system for their customers. One of my client opened lot of ticket for software issues and missconfigured DNS wich was not OVH fault now tickets from his account hardly get any answer. On my account I opened ticket only for hardware problem or control panel bugs. The hardware problem have been answered and the bugs corrected within hours. I usualy get answers in less than 2 hours.

In conclusion I would say that you need to be an experienced admin or have one under hand. Don't bother them with software issue, it's not their problem. If you want to test their service, just suscribe one month on their low offer, it will cost you less than $20 and you will be fixed.

I took time to write this long review because OVH never let me down and make me save lot of money compared to other services. I send them lot of customer and allways have good return. I'm a happy customer.
